Why Do We Baptize?
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness. ”Then John consented. (Matthew 3:13-15)
After you become a Christian (when you fully surrender your life to Jesus and place your faith in Him), your next step is to take part in believer’s baptism. While baptism is not necessary for salvation, Christ has commanded us to be baptized. “If you love me, keep my commands.” (John 14:15)
It is important for us to realize that baptism is not a requirement to go to heaven. You can go to heaven without being baptized. If there was someone who never needed to be baptized, it was Jesus! Even though Jesus did not need to be baptized, He did it anyway. If that was important to Christ, it should be important to us.
When we are baptized in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, we are doing it for several reasons:
The first reason allows you to preach your very first sermon. When someone is put under the water by immersion and then pulled up out of the water, they are publicly stating, “I am clean. I am clean because of the blood of Christ, which was shed on the cross.” It is a statement of purity, not from the water, but from the blood of Christ.
The second reason is to show your obedience to Christ. Baptism is a step of obedience. When someone is baptized, they are saying, “I am seeking to be obedient. Jesus said, “I need to be baptized, so I'm being baptized.” You can’t go wrong when you follow Jesus Christ!
