Wash My Feet
“No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!” (John 13:8-9)
Acting as a host, Jesus washed the feet of His disciples. On the night He was betrayed and denied, He washed their feet. He initiated it before any of them could perform this task. Jesus was a servant! Meeting even their menial needs by selfless acts of service, Jesus showed us a new path for His children. Instead of wanting to be served by others, we are to willingly serve others. How do we get there?
This cuts against the very grain of our culture. Since biblical times, we as a culture have not learned much from the ministry of Jesus. We are still impressed by those who have become icons in their professions; they are presently being served by those who wish one day to be in the very same place.
Worshipping at the altar of influence and fame will not take you very far. To the contrary, it will leave you empty and hollow. Those who have obtained the world’s applause still wrestle with the emptiness which money and applause cannot fill. To be a servant means we will have to go against the world in which we live. It will also call for us to live outside our own flesh. We want others to serve us. However, the greatest joy occurs when we serve others.
Today, do something to serve one of God’s children. Try picking something practical and meaningful. Not everyone around you needs to have their feet washed because they wear sandals, but they have other needs which are very practical and necessary. Ask God to show you what you can do. He will answer your prayer; just be willing to listen!
