Gifts from the Holy Spirit
Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines. (1 Corinthians 12:7-11)
When you accept Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, and begin to follow Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside of you. Not only that, but the Holy Spirit also equips you with specific gifts to further God’s Kingdom and to minister to His people.
There are several different gifts that followers of Christ can receive from the Holy Spirit. For instance, there is the gift of administration, which is the ability to organize and mobilize God’s people. There is the gift of teaching, where you understand the Word of God and explain it to others so they can understand it and apply it. There is the gift of service, which prompts you to help others and jump in whenever you are needed. Also, there is the gift of encouragement, where you are constantly cheering other people on and building them up.
The main thing you should understand is that these gifts come directly from the Holy Spirit. They are not characteristics or personality traits you developed on your own. As soon as you enter into a relationship with Christ, these are gifts which become part of your wiring.
Each person is gifted differently and purposefully, so that we can fulfill God’s plan for our lives. I encourage you to ask the Lord to make it clear which gifts He has given you. With that understanding, He will give you opportunities to use your gifts for His glory. When you use your spiritual gifts, you will not feel exhausted or burned out. Instead, you will be filled up because you are intentionally using these gifts that are uniquely yours in order to honor your Heavenly Father. As you use those gifts to serve those around you, there is nothing more fulfilling.
