Deep Thirst
...I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. (Psalm 63:1)
The Psalmist said it perfectly, I thirst for you… Deep inside all of us is the longing for God Himself. As our Maker and Creator, He has planted within all of His children a longing which cannot be quenched except for Him and Him alone. Since the time of Adam and Eve walking with the Lord in the Garden of Eden, man still longs for something that can only be thoroughly satisfied by the King of Kings.
Although some people try to fill the longing with success, the void still exists and remains unfilled to this day. The real question today is, “Have you come to acknowledge your thirst?” Making peace with your inner pursuit is like a laser hitting the desired target. You finally know in your knower that you are on the right track, and headed down the correct path.
There is more to consider here. He continues, My whole being longs for you. Every question or pursuit in life is leveled before this phrase. When I was invited to speak at a huge spiritual gathering for believers years ago, I anticipated that the longing within my young heart would be fulfilled. To speak at this event was one of my aspirations ever since I was called into ministry. For me, it was the pinnacle of success. I knew that when I reached that goal, I would receive the affirmation which I desired to experience. Following one of the great speaking giants in Christianity, I stepped to the pulpit and delivered the message I knew God wanted me to deliver, one that had been prayed over and planned with all of my heart and skill.
Finally, stepping down off the platform, there was a big hole within me. I thought to myself, “Is that all there is?” The event was over and done with and I was still empty within. I had assumed this would meet some important success goal in my life, but it left me feeling like I was holding an empty brown bag. In those next moments, I remembered all of the time in prayer and fellowship I had experienced with the Lord, in preparation leading up to this event. Those quiet times alone with Him were more fulfilling and affirming than all that I would do for Him that day.
We are living in a dry and parched land where there is no water. Our culture will not quench your thirst and neither will any relationship outside of the one you have with the Lord! The sooner we come to that baseline, the sooner we will have peace within. Living in a dry and parched land means that unless you travel with Him who is the Living Water, you will have lean times and a dry mouth. Drink deeply this day. Don’t allow these encouraging words to be the end of your time alone with God. Use them as the springboard into His deep waters. Stay longer in this moment, and let Him nudge you back onto the parched path when it’s time to go.
Dear Jesus, “Show me how to drink in your living water today. My lips are dry, but I know I am at the right place to have my longings met. I earnestly wait for You!”
