Who Jesus Says He Is
To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation. (Revelation 3:14)
In this Scripture verse, we find three different phrases that Jesus is using to describe Himself to the church at Laodicea and to us. It is important that we understand the meaning and the magnitude of the titles Jesus gives Himself. These titles allow us to learn more about Him and understand more of who He is as our Lord and Savior.
First, Jesus calls Himself “The Amen.” This title comes out of Isaiah, “Whoever invokes a blessing in the land will do so by the one true God; whoever takes an oath in the land will swear by the one true God. For the past troubles will be forgotten and hidden from my eyes” (Isaiah 65:16)
In this Scripture, we find the God of “The Amen.” This means He is utterly to be relied upon. It is almost like Jesus is saying, “Verily, Verily I say unto you.” It is a repetition that He is The Amen. He is the first and the last, the last word, totally in charge!
Second, He describes Himself as “The Faithful Witness.” This details that He is saying, “I have seen you with my own eyes and I am being absolutely honest with you, to tell you what I see in you.” Nothing is more awesome than to be seen by God. He sees you. He knows everything about you. He knows everything you will do, and everything you've already done. He even knows the position that you are in right now. Nothing is hidden from Him.
Third, He describes Himself as “The Ruler of God’s Creation.” Jesus is the Originator of all things. Nothing has existed that He has not originated. Nothing will exist that has not come from His hand. He is the Creator. With that authority, it is important for us to move on, to realize that Jesus is very serious. The reason He is saying these characteristics is that the church (as well as each of us today) needs to understand His authority and His reliability.
Jesus is in control and He is faithful. He is ruler of all. We should have confidence in Him because of these truths and know that we can always rely and depend upon Him.
