Encouraging Words

Therefore encourage one another with these words. (1 Thessalonians 4:18)

For years as a pastor, I have walked the grief road with those who are saying good-bye for a final time at a gravesite to a dearly cherished loved one. When I open the Bible to these words (especially from verse 13 to the end of the chapter), it changes the atmosphere every time. Although the grief process has a journey to complete, nothing like the Word of God gives more comfort to broken hearts. Paul outlines the order of bodily resurrection in those verses. After this devotional, read them fresh and new today. You will need them, not only for the time when you walk that path with a grief-filled friend, but also for today.  

We are talking about real encouragement. How do you encourage others? Phrases like, “Nice tie!” or “Love your outfit!” meant to encourage and compliment others, often get filed away in the minds as small talk or conversation starters. Do you want to encourage another believer? Talk about the resurrection. Talk about the Second Coming of Jesus. The conversation will take on a different tone and produce a different outcome, as well.
 
We are meant to bring encouragement to others. Try giving encouragement, which moves someone from despair to hope, from present struggles to future glory. Try this out today, even if you initially feel awkward. Remember, these words bring encouragement to believers. They get it.  

Those who don’t know Christ can’t relate to resurrection talk, but those who do know Jesus will understand. When we talk of the resurrection, it really brings us to the brink of thinking about the real world; heaven is more real than our physical world right now. Watch where God will take the conversation with someone who loves Christ. They might need that kind of encouragement today more than you know. And maybe…you do, too!
 
“Oh, Lord, help us live today with our hearts focused on eternity, with joy and not just the labor this day brings on this planet! Please come quickly, Jesus!”
