Jesus Prayed For Us
Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals – one on his right, the other on his left. Jesus said, “Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. (Luke 23:32-34)
To think about Jesus praying for the people who were crucifying Him is absolutely mind blowing. Try and picture this moment in history. There Jesus is, hanging on a cross, beaten beyond recognition, struggling to breathe as He dies the most gruesome type of death. Surrounding Him are crowds of people mocking Him, spitting on Him, and gambling for His clothes. And Jesus’ first response? To pray for every single one of those people.
It’s incredible to think about the amount of love Jesus had as He prayed this prayer from the cross. But what’s also incredible is that just as Jesus was praying for those people then, He’s praying for us now.
Hebrews 4:14-16 reminds us of this truth, saying, “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
In other words, when you are going through a difficult time, Jesus knows exactly what you’re going through. He feels what you are feeling. He understands the pain, the agony, the disappointment, the depression, the angst, all of it. He understands that because He went through the very same things during His time on earth, specifically in His final days. And because He can empathize with our pain and our struggles, He is always interceding on our behalf.
Nothing is more powerful than being confident in the fact that Jesus is praying for you. Rest in that confidence and that assurance today, knowing that just as Jesus prayed for others on the day of His death, He is praying for you today.
