Drinking The Cup
“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” (Luke 22:42)
I want to talk to you today about what it means to drink the cup that is the will of God for your life. Each of us is given a metaphorical cup by God, and this cup is a representation of God’s will, plan, and purpose for your life. And it is our responsibility as followers of Jesus to drink from this cup and fulfill the Lord’s will.
But drinking this cup isn’t as easy as taking a sip of your morning coffee. In fact, there are a lot of difficulties and repercussions that will come about as you drink from your cup. Let’s take a look at a couple of those repercussions today, and we will look at a few more tomorrow.
First, there will be well-meaning people who won’t understand your cup. Maybe the Lord is leading you to make a big, yet unconventional decision. Maybe He’s called you to a specific career that most people avoid. Whatever the case may be, the important thing to remember is that you’re only responsible for obeying the Lord. Even if other people don’t understand why you’re doing what you’re doing, as long as you’re being obedient, you don’t need to hesitate in drinking your cup based on the understanding of others.
Additionally, when it comes to following God’s will, there will be times when you’re tempted to drop your cup. Part of being a Christian means trusting God when life doesn’t make sense, and that means living according to His will, even when you don’t understand it. Even Jesus wanted to drop His cup at one point, but when that temptation bubbled up, He rose above, and we should do the same. God has given you your cup for a specific purpose. So stay steadfast in your obedience and don’t drop your cup.
