The Saddest Word
"Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God." — Psalm 42:5
What is the saddest word in the English language?
Hopelessness.
It's the place where you say, "I'll never be happy again. I'll never feel love again. I'll never be healthy again. I'll never have any more money again." It's the dead-end road where tomorrow looks exactly like today, and today feels unbearable.
The disciples knew that place. When Jesus was crucified, their dreams were dashed. Everything they had believed in, everything they had given their lives to, hung lifeless on a cross. They were in shock, in despair, and utterly without hope.
But then Sunday came.
When Jesus showed up and initiated a fresh encounter with His disciples, hope began to arise. Not wishful thinking, but something far stronger. The Greek word for hope in the New Testament isn't about wishing for things you probably won't get, like hoping someone gives you a sports car. Biblical hope is a calm assurance, the ability to look positively toward tomorrow because you know who holds tomorrow.
"'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the LORD, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future'" (Jeremiah 29:11).
God is in the business of restoring hope. He wants you to believe that He has a future for you, that He's not through with you yet. And just like He appeared to those hopeless disciples and changed everything, He can appear in your hopelessness and do the same for you.
If you've given up on tomorrow, let me remind you that the God who conquered the grave is still in the resurrection business.
