Control Your Heart
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. (Proverbs 4:23)
When there is trouble in our lives, we tend to focus on that. We think we can work through it by mental-emotional gyrations. We dream about it, talk to our friends about it, and dwell on it. We devote a lot of verbiage to that trouble. Because we are worrying about it, Jesus is saying, “Don't let your hearts be troubled.”
Take charge of your emotions. Jesus knew what it felt like to be troubled. In fact, the word for “troubled” is the very same word that is used in John, when Jesus went to the tomb of Lazarus. He was deeply moved and troubled, When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. (John 11:33)
Jesus knew what it was like to be troubled. You may not be able to avoid being troubled, but you can control allowing your heart to dominate you. Scripture tells us, Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it, (Proverbs 4:23)
Jesus is saying that your heart is the wellspring of life. You have to guard it and put a hedge or barrier around it. You should follow what Jesus is calling you to do. Protect your heart so that it does not completely control you.
