Yes and No in Scripture
“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13)
For many people, their Christian life is all about, “No, don't do that. Don't do this. You had better not do that. That's wrong. You had better watch out. You're on the wrong side.” They don't realize how many Yeses there are in Scripture. When there are Noes, it is to keep us from driving off the road. The Noes keep us from making moral decisions that will blow up in our lives. Just because there are Noes doesn’t mean there aren’t any Yeses.
We need to remember that the Christian life is more Yeses than Noes. As James said, “Let's not make it difficult.” (Acts 15:19) The Christian life isn’t easy, but we need to see the Yeses even in the midst of difficulty. Simply look at the freedom we have in Christ and notice all that we are capable of doing because of Him. This is an example of a Yes in Scripture! God can do amazing things in your life as long as you are rooted in Christ. “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13)
These are some Yeses in Scripture: “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (Romans 8:37) God wants to empower you to live your life with great joy. “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?” (Romans 8:35)
When you become a follower of Christ, Jesus lives in you. As Paul says, “He is the hope of glory.” He wants to live His life through you to see all the Yeses He has for you. He is not here to rain on your parade. When He does say No, and when His Spirit draws you back again, He is doing this to protect you. His Noes are for positive reasons. We need to realize that we have a responsibility to live our lives as God desires. We are accountable to Him in both the Yeses and the Noes.
