Learning To Be Alone
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)
In our culture today, it seems like everyone is constantly occupied. People are wearing headphones, and they are on their phones. They have the TV running in the background, and there is noise all of the time.
As humans, we choose this constant noise because we don’t like being alone. When we are alone, we have to deal with our issues. It means acknowledging our pain rather than dealing with it. We would rather not experience pain if we can avoid it.
Can you intentionally be alone with God and allow Him to speak to you? Will you allow Him to deal with your pain and uncertainty?
God took Elijah on a journey which lasted 40 days and 40 nights in order to get him alone. He led him to a cave by himself where there were no people, sounds, or distractions; just the still, small voice of God.
God loves times like these when it is just you and Him, when He can speak clearly to you, and you can listen closely to Him. This is why a daily quiet time, a disciplined time alone with God, is so important for us as followers of Christ. If you are not already setting aside time to spend with the Lord each day, there is no better time to begin than at the start of a new year.
I encourage you to take some time, starting today, to spend ample quality time alone with your Heavenly Father. Lean in close to Him and listen to what He is saying to you. As you do, you will quickly learn that this time with Him is the most precious, necessary part of your day.
