The Call to Intercede
Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. —Galatians 6:2
Years ago, my family went on a hike in Colorado. We loaded up backpacks with everything we needed—sleeping bags, tents, food, and water purifiers. As we made our way up the trail, the weight and altitude overwhelmed us. My youngest son Zack laid down on the trail, took off his backpack, and said, “Dad, I’m done. Just leave me here.” I told him, “No, we have to keep going.” He put his backpack back on, and it was a struggle, but we made it.
That struggle is a picture of the Christian life. Sometimes God calls us to carry burdens—not physically, but spiritually. These burdens come from the heart of God. When He reveals a burden, He is inviting us to partner with Him in prayer.
There are three ways you’ll recognize a burden to intercede:
God shares His heart with His children. When He places a person or situation on your heart, He is still working in that life. As long as the burden remains, don’t stop praying. This is God’s work done God’s way.

There are three ways you’ll recognize a burden to intercede:
- A compassion of concern—not just “I care,” but a deep, God-given empathy.
- A deep personal impression—a knowing in your spirit that this is from the Lord.
- A sense of urgency—you feel you must pray, and you keep praying until the burden lifts.
