A Quiet Ambition
"And to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you, so that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one." — 1 Thessalonians 4:11–12
Have you ever thought of a quiet life as something to be ambitious about?
That phrase almost sounds like a contradiction. Paul tells the Thessalonians to aspire, to strive, to make it their goal to live quietly. Most ambition in our world is loud. We want to be noticed. We want the title, the platform, and the followers. We want people to know what we've done.
But Paul gives us a different kind of ambition, and he spells it out in three simple instructions. Live quietly. Mind your own affairs. Work with your hands.
Let's be honest about that middle one. Some of us are experts on everybody else's business. We know what's going on in every family in the neighborhood and every department at work. And we can get so busy managing other people's lives that we neglect our own.
Now why does Paul care about this? He tells us. So that you may walk properly before outsiders. People who don't know Jesus are watching how we live. They notice who stirs up drama and who settles it. They notice who does honest work and who looks for shortcuts. They notice who pays their bills and treats people right.
You don't need a microphone to preach a sermon. A believer who shows up on time, does the job well, keeps their word, and stays out of the gossip is preaching one every single day. And that quiet sermon is often the one that opens a door for the gospel.
So this week, turn the volume down. Let go of the drama that isn't yours to carry. Put your hands to the work God has given you and do it faithfully. It may not get you noticed by the world, but it will be noticed by the One who matters most.
