Praying To Remind Yourself
You are my strength, I watch for you; you, God, are my fortress, (Psalm 59:9)
Prayer is an ongoing conversation with God. Praying without ceasing should be the default position for every believer as they live moment by moment. Many of our prayers are more self-reminders than news flashes for heaven. This prayer is the same. The psalmist is verbalizing in prayer a fresh commitment to the Lord to live a certain way. We could learn a great deal from him today, if we would simply implement the same kind of prayer.
Lord, you are my strength! All physical, mental and emotional strength that we have comes as a precious gift from heaven itself. When we acknowledge where our strength radiates from, it does our heart good to know it is not alone. When we verbalize our commitment to the Lord, it is a powerful thing. As we declare to our King that we receive all of our strength from Him, it puts us in the right frame of mind.
Additionally, when we take the next step of acknowledging our waiting for the Lord, and watching for His presence, we again find ourselves in a calm place of deep peace. Our strength flows from our spiritual position in Christ, and nothing is more secure than that. On top of this, when we (like the psalmist) speak about acknowledging the Lord as our fortress, we are doing several things. First, we are saying, He alone gives us the strength we need to exist. Second, we are saying, He alone is where we stand secure and protected.
This kind of praying reminds us daily that the Lord has us covered. He walks before us, as well as behind us. He has our flanks, foundation and the air above us covered with His presence. This spells security and protection. Remind yourself to not only pray like this daily, but live with full confidence in this moment. It is the only moment you have to spend!
