Healing Misconceptions
To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given to me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:7-9)
When we see someone who is going through some kind of pain, a person who needs healing; we might have many misconceptions regarding this person’s life. I have heard people say, “Oh, they must not have enough faith, because if you have enough faith, you will be healed.” I’ve also heard it said, “Physical health is a sign of someone’s spiritual health, so there must be something deeper going on.”
Neither of these claims are biblical and based on Scripture. There were instances during Jesus’ ministry where He healed people who had no faith whatsoever. In John 5:1-11, we read the story of the man at the pool of Bethesda. Instead of having faith in Jesus’s healing ability, he made excuses for why he couldn’t walk, but Jesus healed him anyway.
Sometimes, people were healed because they had faith. Other people were healed when they had no faith at all. Some people were healed because of the faith of other people. Clearly, God can choose to heal with different methods in various ways.
The Lord’s healing of you is not contingent on the amount of faith and righteousness you have. This would imply that you can earn your healing; and this is not the message of the Gospel.
In regard to the misconception that your physical health is parallel with your spiritual health, the Apostle Paul can disprove this statement very quickly. In 2 Corinthians Chapter 12, Paul talks about a God-given thorn in his side. He says he pleaded with God multiple times to take it away, but the relief never came. If any human in all of history were to be described as holy, it would be Paul. He had an extremely close relationship with the Lord, becoming the greatest missionary of all time. Even so, he never experienced the physical healing He was seeking.
